Restore the Look of Your Teeth with Inlays & Onlays
Inlays & Onlays
Inlays and onlays are commonly used when over half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged due to dental caries or trauma. Inlays and onlays can be created using composite resin, porcelain, or even gold which is bonded to the damaged tooth.
An inlay is used to fill the inside of damaged tooth cusps, similar to a filling. An onlay is similar to the inlay but it extends over one or more cusps of the tooth. In the past, gold was the material of choice for inlays and onlays, because of its durability. With modern dentistry allowing for more natural-looking restorative options, porcelain has become increasingly popular. Porcelain inlays and onlays are not only durable but they match the natural colour of your teeth.
How are inlays & onlays applied?
Applying inlays and onlays is a two-appointment procedure. During the first visit, we will remove any existing fillings or remove any decayed tooth structure and prepare the tooth for the inlay or onlay. We will take a dental impression of your teeth to ensure we get a precise fit and bite when fabricating the inlay or onlay. The dentist will then apply a temporary sealant to prevent plaque or food particles from entering the prepared tooth area.
At the second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed and the dentist will check to make sure the inlay or onlay fits comfortably. If the fit is accurate, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth and polished.
