Fix Chipped or Cracked Teeth with Bonding

Similar to veneers which are applied to the front surface of teeth, bonded restorations or “bonding” uses composite resin which is applied to a smaller portion of the tooth to restore teeth that are chipped, cracked or discoloured. Bonding can even be used to fill in gaps between teeth.

To prepare the tooth for bonding, the dentist will lightly etch the tooth surface and apply a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, composite resin is applied in layers and sculpted into a natural tooth shape. A light is used to harden each layer of composite. Once each layer is hardened, the resin is trimmed, smoothed and polished.

How long does bonding take to apply?
The bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit. Although composite is quite durable, it is still prone to stains, chipping and breakage. Bonding typically lasts three to five years before requiring repair.
